Digital Guernsey - Do we have a hope? (15 October)

Posted on Wednesday 20 August 2014 13:42

Summary
Given the importance of technology for our future well-being, suggestions that Guernsey should aspire to be in the Top 10 global jurisdictions for technology have been both promoted and rubbished by those in government and the wider Guernsey community during 2014.
Titled 'Digital Guernsey - Do We Have A Hope?', this presentation will summarise our current position, highlight some international leaders, look at current local plans, and question how organised and resourced we are. In addition, recognising that the British Computer Society "promotes wider social and economic progress through the advancement of information technology science and practice", a further question will be posed relating to "Who are the We?"

IT Systems in Insurance (11 June)

Posted on Friday 16 May 2014 15:58

Providing IT systems into a 24x7 dynamic retail insurance company from Guernsey
By John Davison, Chief Architect at First Central Group

John will talk about how this growing Guernsey company has conceived, developed and implemented a blended IT platform comprising COTS (Commercial off the Shelf) best of breed components and in-house developed user interfaces and integration layers to enable its UK subsidiary to force a significant market share in an established motor market. Their effective use of modern technology and “no legacy” approach to IT systems enables First Central to handle over 400k quotation requests daily, the vast majority originating from the insurance aggregation market. They are amongst the most stable and timely responders, despite consuming multiple real-time data enrichment services to enable accurate pricing.

First Central have quickly established themselves as a disruptive force within the UK motor market and continue to grow their share with the addition of new IT capabilities beyond the effective use of their larger, technologically older competitors. First Central believe that their blended approach to IT is unusual amongst their peers and John will discuss how this strategy is delivered and managed from Guernsey, and how, with a small but knowledgable team they are able to support IT systems serving over 500 UK staff and a business exceeding £125m GWP.

John will discuss First Central’s approach to scalability, stability and how continued innovation will keep First Central ahead in this highly competitive business.
